PLOT SUMMARY
Every Sunday after church, CJ and his grandma ride the bus
across town. On this day though, CJ wonders why they don’t own a car like his
friend Colby. Why doesn’t he have an iPod like the boys on the bus? How come
they always must get off in the dirty part of town? Each question, the
grandmother answers in a way to have the young boy reflect on what is beautiful
and fun in their world. The deep connection between grandparent and grandchild
is reflected in this energetic ride through a busy city and comes to life
through the descript text and radiant illustrations.

CRITICAL ANAYLSIS
When it comes to the writing of
words, De La Pena uses descriptive imagery to convey messages of diversity,
people’s circumstances, the importance of charity, and how it is essential to
help others in need in his book Last Stop On Market Street. The dialogue
between the two main characters explains in a loving way how these differences
cause a response in people, and what the proper response should be.
The description of what CJ sees,
hears, and smells, helps put the reader in the journey through the city with
the boy and his grandmother.
The illustrations by Christian
Robinson are painted in acrylics and compiled with collage. The colors are
vibrant and reflect how the grandmother wants her grandson to see the city,
with energy and beauty. Some images are boxed in, while others cover the whole
page with the words included in the image.
